What is color noise?
Color noise refers to different types of random audio signals, each named after a color by analogy with the visible light spectrum. Just as colors differ in their light frequency, noise colors differ in how power is distributed across the audible frequency range.
White noise has equal power at every frequency — the brightest, most neutral sound. Brown noise (or red noise) rolls off sharply toward higher frequencies, creating a deep bass rumble. Pink noise sits between them, with equal energy per octave — the most natural-sounding of the three.
These sounds work for sleep and focus by raising the ambient noise floor, which makes sudden disruptive sounds — a door slam, a car horn — less jarring by comparison. This is called sound masking, and it's the same technology used in hospitals, offices, and sleep clinics worldwide.
