Blue Noise vs White Noise: What's the Difference and Which to Use

These two get confused because they're both bright compared to brown or pink noise. But they're built differently, and the difference determines which one you should use.

The core difference
White noise has equal energy at every frequency. Flat across the entire audible spectrum, from 20Hz to 20kHz. That's the definition.
Blue noise has energy increasing with frequency, at 3dB per octave. It has very little bass, moderate mid-range, and a lot of treble.
Practically: white noise covers everything. Blue noise covers the top third and largely ignores the rest.
How they sound
White noise sounds like static, an untuned radio, or a fan on high. It has a full, dense quality — there's something happening at every pitch.
Blue noise sounds thinner and sharper. Like escaping steam, or a distant sprinkler, or white noise with the bass rolled off. It's noticeably brighter and has less body.
Play them one after the other and the difference is obvious within a second or two.
For sleep
White noise wins for most people.
Its even coverage masks a broader range of the sounds that actually disturb sleep — low-frequency footsteps and traffic as well as high-frequency squeaks and birdsong. Blue noise handles only the top end.
White noise also has less pronounced high-frequency emphasis, which means less of the alertness activation that can subtly keep you awake.
Blue noise wins only if: you have high-frequency tinnitus that white noise doesn't quite cover, or the specific sound waking you is high-pitched, or you find any low-frequency content physically uncomfortable.

For tinnitus
Blue noise often wins, and this is the main reason to choose it.
High-frequency tinnitus — the most common kind — sits around 4kHz–8kHz. White noise has energy there, but it's spread across the whole spectrum, so a lot of its output is going into frequencies that aren't helping.
Blue noise concentrates its energy in the band that matters. At the same volume, more of the sound is doing the masking work.
For very high-pitched tinnitus, violet noise goes further still. The trade-off is that violet noise is harsher to listen to for long periods.
A practical approach: try white noise first because it's more comfortable. If it isn't masking your tinnitus adequately, move to blue, then violet.

For focus and work
White noise wins for most focus work, mainly because it's better at masking speech. Human speech intelligibility spans roughly 250Hz to 4kHz, and white noise covers that whole range. Blue noise only covers the top of it, so conversations remain partly audible.
Blue noise wins if drowsiness is your problem. Late-night sessions, monotonous tasks, night shifts. Blue noise's alertness effect is a genuine advantage there.
For deep focus generally, neither is the best choice — brown noise outperforms both.
For masking specific sounds
This is where the choice is most clear-cut, and it depends entirely on what you're masking.

If you can identify one specific high-pitched sound as the problem, blue noise handles it efficiently. If the disturbance is varied or unpredictable, white noise's broad coverage is more reliable.
For long sessions
White noise wins, though neither is ideal.
Ear fatigue is driven mostly by high-frequency content. White noise has a fair amount and becomes tiring after two or three hours for most people. Blue noise has considerably more and fatigues faster still.
For genuine all-day listening, green noise or grey noise are far more comfortable than either.
For babies
White noise, without qualification.
It has the research base, the paediatric guidance, and the closest match to the in-utero sound environment. Blue noise has none of these and its alertness effect is the opposite of what an infant needs.

Choose blue noise when you have a specific reason: high-frequency tinnitus, a specific high-pitched sound to mask, or a need to stay alert rather than relaxed.
